Anne Alden - Artist Statement
My work centers on painting as a study of light, color, and atmosphere. Working primarily in oil, I create images that emphasize luminosity, contrast, and explore the relationship between form and space. Light functions not only as illumination, but as a structural force—revealing, obscuring, and transforming what is seen.
I am drawn to expansive compositions, often working at larger scales to create an immersive visual experience. Whether depicting landscape, symbolic imagery, or imagined environments, my paintings explore the tension between clarity and ambiguity, presence and distance. I build surfaces through layered mark-making, incorporating oil pastels and pencil to extend texture, line, and depth.
My practice is rooted in sustained, independent study and a daily painting schedule. Working in a remote region of Washington has shaped a solitary and focused approach, allowing for ongoing exploration without external constraint. This environment supports a process that is both disciplined and intuitive, where each painting evolves through observation, revision, and response.
I am interested in creating work that holds attention over time—images that reveal themselves gradually through light, surface, and composition. Through this process, I aim to produce paintings that are both visually immersive and materially present, grounded in perception, memory, and the experience of seeing.
I am exploring the integration of my art made through traditional means with applied design.
